Join Fair Patterns as a Legal Engineer

Fair Patterns opens a Legal Engineer position every year. It's become a regular part of how the team grows, since the work this role covers keeps expanding along with the regulatory landscape we track.

Each position runs for at least six months, full time or part time depending on what works for you.

A quick word on what we do

Fair Patterns is a multimodal AI that scans sites, apps and social media to find and fix online manipulation at scale: dark patterns, addictive design, fake discounts, algorithmic pricing discrimination, and similar issues. The goal behind all of it is simple enough to say, harder to do: give people back the ability to make free, informed choices online.

We work with scaleups, Fortune 500 groups and law firms across the EU, the UK and the US. For that kind of work, we need people who can read a law closely and also look at a screen and notice where the design is nudging users somewhere they didn't choose to go.

What the role involves

You'll work alongside the Gen AI team, our designers and our legal counsels. Right now, most of the work centers on Fair Patterns itself.

Day to day, that includes:

• Running dark patterns audits with our AI solution and feeding back detailed findings that help train it further
• Working with our R&D Lab to map legal obligations around dark patterns and digital practices in jurisdictions we haven't covered yet
• Reading up on AI fairness, AI explainability and AI governance
• Following legislation, case law and studies on deceptive design as they come out around the world

Depending on interest and timing, the work can also include:

• Legal research to keep the team current on our areas of expertise
• Translating dense legal language into something people can actually read
• Legal admin and organizational tasks

Who tends to do well here

• A legal background, with solid understanding of privacy, consumer protection and digital law
• Real legal research experience, beyond coursework
• Comfortable with AI tools and platforms like Airtable
• Works well with a team, but doesn't need much hand-holding
• Curious, takes initiative, pays attention to detail
• Fluent in English and French
• Able to commit for at least six months, full time or part time
